Illustration Friday - Rejection

Rejection from school.
This illustration is dedicated to two friends I have in Africa: Tsigu who is 13 and from Addis Ababa and Samuel, 18, from Kigali. Although primary and secondary education are free in Ethiopia, Tsigu was forced to leave school at Grade 5 to care for her mother who has HIV AIDS and her baby brother. She is not unique in being rejected from education - some don't have any schooling and others may be forced to leave for work, because they have no uniform, or distance from school and fear of abduction.
In Rwanda secondary education is not free and, while there are a growing number of children (and adults) staying in education, some like Samuel - a genocide orphan who was brought up by his brother who was tragically killed at Christmas - are rejected. Luckily for Samuel the charity SOS Children's Village has now ensured that he can return to school to complete his secondary education. Tsigu is not so fortunate. Wow, very sad. I have in the past donated to a charity that provides school uniforms for children in parts of Africa where a uniform is essentially "the price of admission" to school. For some that price is too high. Unbelievable, but true.
